Jute rugs: what to expect in the first month

Jute sheds, creases and does not like water. All three are normal, two of them stop, and one of them decides where the rug should go.

Jute rugs: what to expect in the first month

A natural fibre rug behaves differently from a synthetic one, and most complaints about jute in the first month are describing normal behaviour rather than a fault. Knowing which is which saves an unnecessary return.

Here is what happens, in order.

It will shed, and then it will stop

A new jute rug sheds loose fibre for two to four weeks. It is the short ends left over from weaving working their way out, and it is not a sign of a poorly made rug.

Vacuum with the beater bar off, or use a suction-only setting, two or three times a week during that period. It settles down and then it essentially stops.

It will arrive creased

Rugs ship rolled, and jute holds a crease more stubbornly than wool because the fibre is stiff. Unrolled and left flat, most creases relax within a few days.

Reverse-rolling it for a few hours, or laying it face down in a warm room, accelerates this. What does not help is putting furniture on the creases, which sets them.

Water is the real constraint

Jute absorbs water readily and dries slowly, and wet jute can develop brown watermarks as tannins migrate to the surface. This is largely permanent and it is the reason jute belongs in dry rooms.

A hallway that takes wet shoes, a bathroom or a kitchen sink area are the wrong places for it. A living room, a bedroom or a study are the right ones.

Cleaning: dry methods first

Spills should be blotted immediately, never rubbed, and never soaked. For anything dried on, a stiff brush and a vacuum is more effective and much safer than any liquid.

If a wet clean is unavoidable, work on the smallest possible area, use as little moisture as you can, and dry it with a fan. The aim is to avoid the fibre ever becoming saturated.

Use a pad

A rug pad stops a flat-woven jute rug creeping across a hard floor, which is both a nuisance and a trip hazard on a smooth surface. It also adds a small amount of cushioning, which jute has almost none of.

It extends the life of the rug too, by reducing the abrasion between the underside and the floor as it moves.

Where it is genuinely the right choice

Jute suits rooms where you want texture rather than softness, and where the floor beneath is worth breaking up but not hiding. It photographs well and it is considerably cheaper than wool for the same coverage.

It is not a barefoot rug and it is not a rug for a room with a puppy. Choosing it for the right room is most of being happy with it.

Layering over a larger rug

A three-by-five jute rug is small for most living rooms on its own, and the usual answer is to layer it over something larger and plainer. The jute provides the texture and the piece underneath provides the coverage.

It also solves the softness problem, because the layer beneath does the cushioning. Keep the underlying rug plain: two patterns stacked compete, and jute is already a texture rather than a neutral.
